LEARN HOW TO

QUIT SMOKING

WELCOME TO A SMOKE FREE PASO DEL NORTE

We're an initiative of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation. The PdNHF leverages and invests in initiatives, programs, and policies to promote health and prevent disease in the Paso del Norte region. Our region is composed of two countries (USA and Mexico), three states (Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua), five counties (El Paso, Hudspeth, Doña Ana, Otero, and Luna), and includes the Municipio de Cd. Juárez. A Smoke Free Paso del Norte was established in 1999, as one of the Paso del Norte Health Foundation’s first priority health areas with an end goal to eliminate smoking in the region.

Since its inception, our Quit Smoking El Paso initiative and its partners have reduced the prevalence of adult smoking in the region from 21.5% in 1996 to 13.3% in 2010. This effort and its success is recognized as the standard by leading state and national tobacco control organizations.

UNDERSTANDING

THE DANGERS OF

SMOKING

A Smoke Free Paso del Norte uses a comprehensive and coordinated approach to eliminating tobacco use utilizing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention best practices. These approaches include eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke, promoting and assisting tobacco users to quit, preventing the initiation of tobacco use, and identifying and eliminating tobacco-related disparities among population groups. The initiative also regularly monitors tobacco product use and sale in the community.

HELPING SOMEONE ELSE QUIT

If you’re looking to help a friend, loved one, or family member quit smoking, you can help. The American Lung Association offers these tips:

  • Tell your friend that you know he or she can quit smoking for good, even if he or she has tried to quit before.

  • For the first few days after the smoker quits, be ready to help. He or she may just want to talk, or your friend may want extra help when a tough situation arises, such as a party, or a crisis at home or work.

  • Offer to call or visit to check on them. Ask how your friend is feeling, not just whether or not they are still off cigarettes.

  • No nagging, scolding, or preaching—that just doesn't work. Instead, let your friend know how much you admire them for trying to quit.
